Dupont-Warren Fellowship Award 2007-2008
Available through the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, this award will provide a fellowship stipend for one year, effective July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. Historically, 3-4 awards are made annually.
Award
In keeping with the intentions of the donor to create opportunities for advanced study and research in Psychiatry, and to serve as a bridge between clinical training and the development of a research career, full-time stipends of $57,350 will be awarded to eligible applicants. (A full-time award is considered to represent least 80% effort.) Further, to promote research development, half-time stipends of $27,500 may be awarded for use in the PGY-4 year. Review criteria for these half-time stipends will focus primarily on the training plan, quality and extent of mentoring, and the candidate’s potential to develop into a clinician-scientist.
Since this award will not pay any fringe benefit expenses, the sponsoring institution must assume responsibility for those expenses. It is expected that recipients will update the Research Committee by submitting a brief summary of progress statement on their funded research projects at six months and a final written report at twelve months.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for an award:- MD degree at a clinical level of PGY-4 or higher at time of application for a full stipend
- MD degree at a PGY-3 level at time of application for a half-time stipend
- No more than three years have passed since the end of clinical training
- Cannot hold a faculty appointment in the Department of Psychiatry of Instructor or higher during the fellowship period
Application Process
One hard copy original and one electronic copy (Microsoft Word / Windows compatible format on a CD-ROM) of the application must be presented to the office of Linda Messier, Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School, 401 Park Drive – 2 West-Room 305, Boston, MA 02215, by Friday, January 5, 2007, at 4:00 pm. The following six items must be present in the application to be considered for the fellowship award:
- A cover letter, not to exceed two pages, from the applicant explaining how the Fellowship year will fit into his/her upcoming career plans. The letter should also describe any past or current research experience and committed or pending external funding.
- A current curriculum vitae for the applicant.
- A Research Plan. This should include (a) brief abstract not to exceed 150 words, (b) description of the specific aims of the project, (c) background and significance of the proposed research project, (d) description of the research design, (e) description of methods, (f) discussion of proposed analyses to be used in the project, and (g) timeline for completing the project during the fellowship year. The Research Plan has an absolute limit of 4 pages, single-spaced, with standard type size of 15 characters per inch. One extra page will be allowed for a listing of referenced literature. Appendices will not be accepted.
- A Listing of other research resources available to support the project (e.g., supplies, technical assistance, diagnostic laboratory tests).
- Support from the Fellow’s faculty mentor is an important factor in the evaluation of the application. The Mentor’s Statement must address the following: (a) goals of the project; (b) expected level of participation of the applicant; (c) availability of funds to support the project; (d) mentor’s role in facilitating the fellow’s development in research and completion of the project; (e) extent to which the proposal was conceived, designed, and written by the applicant; (f) how this fellowship year will contribute to the career development of the applicant; and (g) feasibility of completing the project during the fellowship year.
- A letter from the head of the sponsoring hospital department which needs to include a statement of willingness to assume the cost of fringe benefits.
Summary of Fellowship Requirements
- Only MD’s at PGY-4 level or above are eligible for full stipends; MD’s at PGY-3 level are eligible for half-time stipends.
- No fringe benefits can be paid by the fellowship; fringe benefits must be funded by the sponsoring institution.

Kaplen Fellowship on Depression 2007-2008
Available through the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, this award will provide a fellowship stipend for one year, effective July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. Historically, 1-2 fellowships have been made annually.
Award
This notice calls to your attention the availability of the Kaplen Fellowship on Depression Award for the academic year beginning July 1, 2007. The Kaplen Fellowship was endowed specifically to support training in research on depression and allied affective disorders. Funds are to be used solely for salary support not to exceed a full-time stipend of $57,350. (A full-time award is considered to represent at least 80% effort.) Applicants must have an MD and/or PhD degree and must not be more than three years past the completion of training at the time of the application. Applications will also be considered from young investigators who have achieved faculty status of Instructor, but not from those holding the rank of Assistant Professor.
Further, to promote research development, half-time stipends of $27,500 may be awarded for use in the PGY-4 year. Livingston Fellowship Award 2007-2008
Available through the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, this award will underwrite research expenses, travel expenses, or equipment for one year, effective July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008.
Award
In keeping with the intentions of the donor to provide support of beginning investigators in psychiatric research, annual awards will be made in the range of $2,000 to $10,000 (the average award is $3,000-$5,000 with 5-7 awards made each year). It is expected that recipients will update the Research Committee by submitting a brief summary of progress statement on their funded research projects at six months and final written report at twelve months.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for an award:- MD and/or PhD degree at time of application with plan for continuation of advanced training
- Fellow status preferred at time of application, but not more than Instructor level for one year prior to application permitted

The Research Plan has an absolute limit of 4 pages, single-spaced, with standard type size of 15 characters per inch. One extra page will be allowed for a listing of referenced literature. Appendices will not be accepted.
- Support from the Fellow’s faculty mentor is an important factor in the evaluation of the application. The Mentor’s Statement must be completed. It must specifically address each of the following points: a) the goals of the projects; b) the expected level of participation of the applicant; c) the availability of funds to support the project; d) how the mentor will facilitate the fellow’s development in research and completion of the project; 3) the extent to which the proposal was conceived, designed, and written by the applicant; and f) how this fellowship year will contribute to the career development of the applicant.
- A completed Budget Page, specifying how the award will be utilized, with a brief justification for each item. If support for equipment or travel is requested, the mentor must initial the Budge Page to indicate the mentor’s willingness to provide 50% of the costs of these items. Additionally, if salary support is requested for a research assistant, the applicant must specify the tasks to be done by the research assistant and the tasks to be done by the applicant.
- A listing of other research support available to the applicant.

Norman E. Zinberg Fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry Research 2007-2008
The Norman E. Zinberg Fellowship was established to honor Dr. Zinberg, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and to provide support to carry on the spirit and substance of his teaching and research. The Zinberg Fellowship is available through the Research Committee of the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. This award will provide a fellowship stipend for one year, effective July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. It is anticipated that one fellowship will be awarded annually.
Award
This notice calls to your attention the availability of the Norman E. Zinberg Fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry Research for the academic year beginning July 1, 2007. The Zinberg Fellowship was endowed specifically to support training in research on alcohol and drug use disorders. Theoretical or applied research projects that include a social-psychological, public policy, or psychotherapeutic dimension or component will be given priority. Funds may be used for salary support or for salary support plus expenses directly associated with the proposed research project, up to a projected total award of $44,000. Applicants must have an MD and/or PhD degree and be within three years of completion of training at the time of the application. Applications also will be considered from junior investigators who have achieved faculty status of Instructor, but not from those holding the rank of Assistant Professor. Applications from those who will complete the ACGME Partners Addiction Psychiatry fellowship and who wish to pursue a second fellowship year conducting research in addiction psychiatry are strongly encouraged. Applicants must commit to at least half-time effort on the funded project. Review of applications will focus both on the strength of the proposed research project, quality and extent of mentoring, and the candidate’s potential to develop into a clinician-scientist.
