Brain Anatomic Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Childhood Bipolar Disorder

McLean Hospital

Jean A. Frazier, M.D.

Bipolar disorder has been researched in the past; however, there is still much more to be investigated. There has been very little research regarding co-occurrence of bipolar disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children. The purpose of this study is to assess any structural abnormalities in the brain that may be contributing to children having bipolar disorder and ADHD. In doing so, we hope to gain a better understanding of the coexistence of BPD and ADHD in children. We will be conducting interviews, cognitive/ neuropsychological testing, a physical/ neurological examination, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with subjects between 4 and 19 years of age who meet DSM-IV criteria for bipolar disorder, ADHD, or bipolar disorder and ADHD. We will be conducting these same measures with controls that have no DSM-IV diagnoses and no family history of ADHD, bipolar disorder, or psychotic disorders.
