CLINICAL STUDIES IN PATIENTS WITH SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS

The purpose of this series of projects is to study clinical characteristics of patients with substance use disorders, with particular emphasis on the study of existing treatments and the development of new treatments for substance dependent patients. Specific studies involved in this project include studying combinations of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy in the treatment of patients with alcohol dependence; new treatment approaches for individuals with bipolar disorder and substance use disorder and women with substance use disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder; gender differences in recovery from substance dependence; health services studies of patients with substance use disorders and psychiatric illness; and studies of self-help group utilization in substance dependent patients.
